Crazy July

If I don't say this enough, please know that my husband is pretty awesome.  He has to go to this conference to a beautiful beach in July, and I was all bummed that I couldn't join him.  But he totally surprised me yesterday by telling me that he arranged for me to go, even down to the babysitting!  (Shout out to my awesome siblings-in-law for keeping the kids!!)  He's going to be working the entire time, and I won't even see him, but hello Mommy break!  Um, yeah, I think jogging on the beach by myself will be just fine.  I'm so super excited.

Speaking of jogging, we decided last night to put the big money projects on hold until we catch our breath, so that means that marathon training is back on!  We were about to jump into some major renovations, and then we thought it might be a good idea to just wait things out for a while.  It would be fun to do the things we were thinking about to the house, but it didn't feel right.  Jogging again definitely feels right, though!  These fluffy love-handles are not cute at all.   And I'm super excited about running my first marathon in December.  Anyone else running White Rock this year?

True to form, July will be a bit crazy this year.  We'll have more swim lessons, cousins visiting for a week, Pa-pa visiting for a weekend, a day trip to Austin, camp for the older two, our beach trip, and more!!!  So waiting on those renovations sounds like an even better idea.

In case you didn't see it on Arlington Mama's Facebook page, my guest bathroom is coming along nicely.  We're kind of taking our time with it, but here it is so far...

I'll do a big before and after of this when it's finished, too.  This pic was taken right after the tile sealant was put on, so it's not shiny now.  Anywho, stay tuned!

Living Room Before and After

What's that I hear you say?  You want to see ten thousand pictures of my living room?  Oh sure!!
So last night Michael had to go out with some of the guys from the Prague office that are in town for the week.  He was the designated driver for three Czechs so, needless to say, it was a long night.  So I put the kids to bed and finished up ironing and hanging my curtains.

What's more fun than hanging 12 foot curtains, you ask?  Anything...anything at all.  Nail in the eye?  Yes.  IBS?  Probably.  Screaming children?  Absolutely.

I was up until 1AM and am a moody mess this morning, but it was worth it.
So just to refresh your memory, here are my BEFORE pictures. "living room reveal", "living room furniture", "high ceiling room", "tall curtains", "extra long curtains", "new furniture", "furnishing a new house", "two focal point living room", "arranging furniture", "new house", "decorating a new house"Oh the potential."living room reveal", "living room furniture", "high ceiling room", "tall curtains", "extra long curtains", "new furniture", "furnishing a new house", "two focal point living room", "arranging furniture", "new house", "decorating a new house"This was after I unpacked the living room.  The rest of the house was in boxes, but I was just happy to have one room semi set up.  I was uncertain about it, but I was testing the water.
"living room reveal", "living room furniture", "high ceiling room", "tall curtains", "extra long curtains", "new furniture", "furnishing a new house", "two focal point living room", "arranging furniture", "new house", "decorating a new house"Painting it made a huge difference.
"living room reveal", "living room furniture", "high ceiling room", "tall curtains", "extra long curtains", "new furniture", "furnishing a new house", "two focal point living room", "arranging furniture", "new house", "decorating a new house"So I showed that “unpacked” picture to a designer, and he told me that  I needed for the TV to be the main focal point since the furniture would face it.  So I started shopping.

I had a vision in my head of the feel I wanted.  I like pretty floraly and paisley patterns, and I’m in love with nail head finished furniture.

This is a leather front cabinet on my Hooker TV stand.  As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the one.  Love at first sight.  I definitely think you should feel that way about big purchases.  It shouldn’t just work; you should swoon over it.
"living room reveal", "living room furniture", "high ceiling room", "tall curtains", "extra long curtains", "new furniture", "furnishing a new house", "two focal point living room", "arranging furniture", "new house", "decorating a new house"This is the Lilianna chair from Pier 1.  I had a 20% off coupon for my entire purchase.  Holla!  That pattern is so perfect to me.

"living room reveal", "living room furniture", "high ceiling room", "tall curtains", "extra long curtains", "new furniture", "furnishing a new house", "two focal point living room", "arranging furniture", "new house", "decorating a new house"And hello, this one is called the Annie Chair.  How could I not get that?  Yes, please, I’ll add that to my 20% off savings.

"living room reveal", "living room furniture", "high ceiling room", "tall curtains", "extra long curtains", "new furniture", "furnishing a new house", "two focal point living room", "arranging furniture", "new house", "decorating a new house"Hi Mr. Craig’s List guy that has an awesome house and whose wife wants all new furniture but already has really cool stuff.  Why yes, I’ll take this chair that’s exactly what I’m looking for for dirt cheap.
"living room reveal", "living room furniture", "high ceiling room", "tall curtains", "extra long curtains", "new furniture", "furnishing a new house", "two focal point living room", "arranging furniture", "new house", "decorating a new house"Do I want to buy $1 fabric samples from JoAnn’s to make awesome pillows out of?  Uh, yeah, kids!  Yeah, I do.  But will they take me more than 15 minutes to make?  No?  Hot damn!
"living room reveal", "living room furniture", "high ceiling room", "tall curtains", "extra long curtains", "new furniture", "furnishing a new house", "two focal point living room", "arranging furniture", "new house", "decorating a new house"So before I show you the big reveal, let me give you a small disclaimer.  The TV is not wall-mounted, but we do plan on doing that once we buy a larger TV.  And then after we do that we’ll put some art on the wall around it to finish out the room.  AND I’m getting a fireplace screen – I just forgot about that until this very moment, and I totally wouldn’t have written this blog post if I would have remembered.  Crap.  So here it goes…

IMG_3079I normally don’t like when the curtains puddle onto the floor just because it makes vacuuming harder, but I didn’t put the rods high enough, so it ended up puddling, and I love it!  Plus, I don’t want to climb onto an extension ladder again for a long, long time.
"living room reveal", "living room furniture", "high ceiling room", "tall curtains", "extra long curtains", "new furniture", "furnishing a new house", "two focal point living room", "arranging furniture", "new house", "decorating a new house"I’m also going to make this round thing into a proper ottoman by putting  a cushion on top.  And  you know it’s impossible to keep anything on a coffee table when you have kids around.  I could have staged something just for the picture, but I didn’t think of it.  Smile with tongue out
"living room reveal", "living room furniture", "high ceiling room", "tall curtains", "extra long curtains", "new furniture", "furnishing a new house", "two focal point living room", "arranging furniture", "new house", "decorating a new house"I had to decide between this table on the wall or a sofa table behind the sofa, and this worked better.  The couch was too close to wall to have a sofa table.

Curtains and Tile and Pond Scum

I feel like I've been starting out every blog post with, "Hey, I'm still alive!"  Life has been so busy lately with swim lessons, house projects, and just keeping a big ol' house clean.  It's good, though.  I'm not complaining, just explaining.  ;)

Okay, so the major selling point of my house was this back yard (again, crappy cell phone pics - my sincerest of apologies).  I love my back yard.

The difficult thing about it, though, is that it's a bit of a haven for mosquitoes, and if you know me, you know that that mosquitoes LOVE me.  My legs look like a 10 year old boy's legs with scabs all over them from scratching all the time.  So we got the yard sprayed and two days later were still having issues.  Then my sweet little Isaac was playing with rocks atop the old, filled in koi pond, and much to my dismay I found that it wasn't actually filled in, only covered with rocks to look like it was filled in.
"swimming pool", "back yard", "filling in a koi pond", "drilling holes in a koi pond", "getting rid of a koi pond", "getting rid of mosquitoes"
When I took those rocks off to uncover this repulsive, stagnant, mosquito larvae-filled mess, I just thought, 'What kind of selfish a-hole does this to a person?!'  OMG, it was disgusting!  So over the course of the next few days I had to get all of the rocks and concrete out, drain it with a bucket, drill holes in the bottom, and fill it back up with dirt and rocks.
This is what it looks like now.  It's not gorgeous or anything, but it'll do for now until I have the time to do something pretty with it.  I just needed to clean it up for now.

So then this weekend I was cleaning out the wood stack and brush behind the pool pump, and I discovered this...
"swimming pool", "back yard", "filling in a koi pond", "drilling holes in a koi pond", "getting rid of a koi pond", "getting rid of mosquitoes"
Do you know what it is, because I didn't?  Well, I googled "submersible sump pump" as it says on the label, and found that it's for removing water...like from a disgusting koi pond.  Awesome.  Oh well, if I would have used it then I couldn't say today that I now know what the most repugnant smell in world is.  C'est la vie.

In better news, I have the tile for my guest bathroom picked out, and it's getting done tomorrow!!!  I love getting floors done.  It changes the whole feel of the room in such a dramatic way.
"swimming pool", "back yard", "filling in a koi pond", "drilling holes in a koi pond", "getting rid of a koi pond", "getting rid of mosquitoes"
The previous owners had put laminate in the bathroom.  Come on, people.  Can we just all agree that that's a bad idea?  Water (more specifically little boy pee) and laminate don't make good friends.

AND!!!  My curtain project on which I sought your advice is underway.  I have to do it while the kids are asleep, so it might take a few more days.  I'm pairing these two panels to create a long enough curtain, and I'm skipping the blinds, afterall.  The one on the right is getting attached to the bottom.

I started sewing them last night, and they're going to look awesome.  Can't wait to show you!

Preview of Wallpaper Horror

The wallpaper in my kitchen is this torn technique that looks kind of old world.  It's not something I would have chosen myself, but it's totally livable and I'm not worrying about it for a while.  It definitely is something that's on my list because it's just not me.  I'd love to tear it down, texture, and paint.

Today, however, I had to remove this DSL jack so that I could put up a bulletin board, and to my horror I discovered that they double wallpapered.  COME ON, PEOPLE!  Why would someone do that to another person?
"Tearing down wallpaper", "doubling wallpaper", "wallpaper on wallpaper"
The good news is that I don't have to live with that striped wallpaper.  The bad news is that I'm probably going to be living with the old world wallpaper for longer than I originally thought I would because tearing that nonsense off the walls does not sound like a fun weekend (or month).

High Ceiling Curtains - HELP!!!!

"High Ceiling Window Treatments", "tall windows", "double windows", "early nineties windows", "backyard windows", "windows to the pool"
Okay, y'all, now's your chance to have some input in my home decorating. I'm totally at a loss. Forgive my crappy cell phone picture.  I still can't find my camera after the move, and I'm seriously having panic attacks about that.

Anywho, I have these ridiculously high windows, and I have no idea how to dress them. I absolutely love the light they bring in and the beautiful view of the backyard. The large windows really do make the backyard a lovely spot at which to gaze and daydream and say to myself, 'Wow, I love my house (but what do I do with these really high windows).'

I considered Roman shades, both fabric and bamboo, like these...

...or these...
"High Ceiling Window Treatments", "tall windows", "double windows", "early nineties windows", "backyard windows", "windows to the pool"

....but I still want the romance of long, flowy, curtains like these....

...and these...

But they just seem so ridiculously long, don't they?  To me it borders on downright silly unless if you're in one uh them thar fancy houses.

So then I saw this, and these people just totally ignore putting something in the top windows, which is what I want to do, but I don't know if that's an appropriate rule to break.  And if I hang curtains, can I hang them in between the top and the bottom windows?

So what do you think?  Can I hang them in between the top and bottom?

Help!!!!

Big House Responsibilities

Just wanted to stop in and say I'm still alive.  I've still been thinking about changing my blog name since I don't live in Arlington anymore.  Just gotta come up with the name now.  It won't be connected to my city this time.

I have also been so busy with this big ol' house. :-P  Those of you with big houses are probably rolling your eyes at me like, 'Duh, honey,' but I really didn't know what a big responsibility having a big house is.  It's not only the cleaning, but it's managing everything else.  I went from having a 1,382 square foot house with a cleaning lady, lawn service, and no pool, to a 2,930 square foot house with a pool and no cleaning lady or lawn service or pool service.  There is also a learning curve with all these newer-house things, like the sprinkler system, pool, larger A/C system, more complicated landscaping, etc.

Don't take all this the wrong way, though.  I'm totally not complaining; I swear!  I love my new house and neighborhood, and I am SO glad we moved.  I'm just super busy with getting the hang of everything.  I'm sure I'll get it soon.  When we moved into our first house after living in apartments, our grass almost completely died and was covered with weeds for the first year.  But after we got the hang of things, it was fine, and dare I say - nice.  I'm just being stretched now, but it's really good.

This week I've been busy shopping for new living room furniture.  That will be my first before and after post.  I'm super excited about it.  Putting this old furniture in this newer, freshly painted house with white carpet was humbling.  Haha!  The furniture looked so dirty and gross in this fresh, crisp room.  If I can finish the laundry today, I'm going to pick up some of the pieces.

I went to Ethan Allen yesterday just to look around and get ideas (it's unfortunately yet obviously not in my budget to shop there), and a designer was helping me (while I was all sweaty and gross from jogging and had two kids in the Bob - I felt so classy), so I showed him this picture of my living room....
....and in his South American, designer voice he said, "You can agree with me that none of this is working, right?"  Ummm, hello, wake-up call!  So this is officially my Before picture.  Stay tuned for an After coming soon!!!
