Prague Pics

As promised, here are some of my favorite pics from my trip to Prague so far.  So let me give you the skinny....Monday I was sick as a dog with a sinus infection, so I slept all day long.  Then Michael and I went to that cool restaurant that I told you about, and we walked the Charles Bridge.  Tuesday, I was so freaking lost and ended up wandering around town aimlessly all day long and missed the tour that I was supposed to take.  It was still nice, though, because I got to take some good pictures.  Here are a few of those:
Prague, St Wenceslas Statue, Wenceslas Square
Wenceslas Square: Statue of St. Wenceslas in front of the National Museum
Prague, St Wenceslas Statue, Wenceslas Square
Wenceslas Square: If you turn around from the statue and walk 50 yards or so, you get this.  This is the most touristy spot in Prague, and I like it but we don't go out to eat there.
Prague, Terezin Concentration Camp, Terezin Ghetto
Terezin: On Tuesday I took a tour of the Terezin ghetto and concentration camp.  This pic is from the ghetto.  Terezin was a riveting trip.  If you've never been to a concentration camp before, put it on your list of things to do.  It was heart-wrenching but necessary.
Prague, Terezin Concentration Camp, Terezin Ghetto
Terezin: This is the memorial for the people that died there.  It was a  transition camp, not an extermination camp, so the numbers of people were less than an extermination camp like say Auschwitz.
Prague, Terezin Concentration Camp, Terezin Ghetto
Terezin: This was at the memorial.  They had a cross there, too, for the Christians that died because they helped the Jews.

Terezin: This is going into the concentration camp.  It's kind of a deceiving picture, I realize.

Terezin: This is inside the "block" of the concentration camp.  This particular door went to the sick room where they had Jewish doctors tending to the extremely sick.  This, of course, was still a travesty because the guards got to choose who was really sick enough to go to that room or not.

Terezin: This, obviously, is where they slept in the concentration camp.  The top picture was in the first section, and the bottom picture was a newer, bigger room that they had built after they had become overcrowded.  Being in those rooms was just chilling.  Especially with it being January and very cold, you got a sense of the hopelessness of it all.
Prague, Terezin Concentration Camp, Terezin Ghetto
Terezin: This was in the jail, a solitary confinement room.  There were also solitary confinement rooms with no windows that were completely dark, and people would end up going crazy in them after a couple of weeks.

Terezin: This room was the washroom with mirrors and sinks that they were never allowed to use.

Terezin: This is a room of jail cells, basically.  All of the doors were opened, and I just honed in on one of the locks.  So sad.
On to something less melancholy....
Prague, Jan Hus Statue, Old Town Square
Old Town Square: This is a statue of the religious reformer Jan Hus who was burned at the stake....oh...I said it wouldn't be as melancholy. Whoops!
Prague, Old Town Square, Astronomical Clock Tower
Old Town Square: This is from the tower of the Astronomical Clock.  It was pretty cool - albeit lots of squeezing through a ton of other tourists in a tight passageway.  The view was well worth it, though.

Old Town Square: This girl with the red scarf leaned over just as I was taking this picture, and I thought it added to the scene perfectly.  I just love it.

That's all I got for now!  There are a TON of other pictures, but I'll probably put them up in a slideshow sometime soon.
