Three Little Birds

Not that it's going to happen any time soon, but I'd really like to get a tattoo at some point in the future.  Michael really doesn't like them, but I'm hoping he'll change his mind in the next few years.  Our favorite song around here is "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley, and that's what I want to get as a tattoo for my three little birds.

Here are a few images that I found off of the internet that I like, although I haven't found the *perfect* one yet .  I haven't decided where I would put it, either.  These are in no particular order:

source
I think this is my favorite (without the script, of course).  But I'd want it to be just a little less sketchy looking.

source
I really love this one, and I like where she put it, too.  I might add a pattern or shading to these guys, though.

source
This is the exact same one on the back of a forearm.  I like it on the back of the neck better.
source unknown
I liked this, but it might be a little too quirky for me.  Cute, though.

This is cute, but you'd have to have a really talented tattoo artist to make it transfer to a tattoo well.
source
I like this (minus the words, of course), but I'd want to de-feminize it since the "birds" are supposed to be my boys.  ;)
source
This one is interesting to me, but it's a little too sketchy.
source unknown
I like the idea of this image a lot with the "branch", but I'd want the birds to be a bit different of a silhouette.
source
I like the idea of this one, but it's a little too babyish and flowery for me.  (Sounds like I don't like it, huh?)
source
This is the same one with a different take on it.  I think I like this one better but with no words.
Now, if I see any of you get one of these tattoos before I have a chance to get it, I'm gonna be really pissed!  Haha...but for real...

  1. I love the idea "Three Little Birds" representing your boys. That is so cute! But, I'll admit, I'm not a fan of tattoos. I can't even stand ink marks on my hand, lol. But, that's just me!

I do love your idea :) But, I think you should do a painting and dedicate it to your boys :) You are too pretty to mark up your body with ink. Not that it would be a bad thing. My husband laughs at me because I love the show LA Ink, I love it and they do amazing work, but, I just don't get why people do it! I hear their stories, but still don't get it! I hope I have not offended you or anyone else that reads your blog.

    1. This is one of the rare times I actually wouldn't be offended by what you posted because even though it's hard to interpret someone's intention through written word, the way you wrote your post does not seem judgmental at all. Thank you for that. :-)

That being said, maybe this will help you understand (not necessarily agree) with the point of view of people who like/love tattoos. I have had many people say things like:
      1. "Your body is a temple. Don't mess it up with tattoos."
      2. "Why would you ruin your body by putting permanent ink on it?"
      3. "You are too pretty to mark up you body with ink." <--- (I know this statement is comprised of the same exact words you used but I wanted to add it because although I did not feel negativity from your post at all, I have heard these words from others often stated in a condescending and judgmental way.)

For a while, I didn't know how to respond because I didn't know how to explain that how I felt about tattoos is different from people making these statements to me, but through the years, I've figured some things out and came up with some meaningful responses:
      1. "Your body is a temple. Don't mess it up with tattoos."
Yes. My body is MY temple. And I LOVE the decorations I've placed on it that tell more about who I am as an individual. My tattoos are part of my story, and how I want to tell it. The idea of messing something up is only in the eyes of a person who considers it a mess in the first place.

      2. "Why would you ruin your body by putting permanent ink on it?"
Where someone else might see it as "ruining", I see it as an enhancement in using a form of art I like to physically show my uniqueness. It is not ruined if I see it as beautiful.

      3. "You are too pretty to mark up you body with ink."
Thank you. I think I'm pretty too. lol. But I don't think my tattoos take away from beauty because they're not there to hide me, but instead as a form of expressing who I am on the inside. To me, they enhance my beauty by showing more than just my genetics. Plus, my tattoos are meaningful and when I look at them on me, I'm reminded of what they represent. When people ask me what they mean, I'm excited to tell them the story.

Hope this helped in understanding why people do it. :-)

  2. You're funny, Misti. Of course I'm not offended. My husband feels the same way. I still have a while to think about it. :)

  3. I LOVE LOVE LOVE The three birds outlined on the back of the neck! Simple, elegant, and meaningful! I could totally see you with that! I've got two small tattoo ideas planned, but not sure when exactly they will come to fruition. I love it!

  4. Ooh, I want to see your ideas for yours! How does Kevin feel about tattoos? He doesn't have any, does he?

Yeah, that one on the back of the neck is the one I'm leaning toward. Would it be too much to pattern them with paisleys? Paisleys are my favorite, and I feel like it looks too unfinished with just the outline. But I'd expect you to stop me if you thought it was tacky! Love you and miss you!

  9. That's awesome, PearlGem! I'm STILL trying to convince my hubby to "let" me get one. Good luck! Send a pic when you get it!!!

  10. If you do get it, just make sure it's in a place that's easy to cover. I have 4 and my employer can only see one because it's on my ankle (a sunflower). The others that have more spiritual meaning behind them are in places that are not appropriate to bare at work anyway.

  11. I have such a thing for birds...and we will have three little birds (when our newest addition comes in October) what beautiful images that you found!

  12. Just googled Three little birds for the same reason. Sounds like other moms of 3 have the same idea. I love it. I am thinking of getting it on my torso "under my wing".

Does anyone have a new one?

  13. Wow....someone took my tattoo (three little birds on the forearm), which I had my artist do for me and put it on their neck.

  14. Oh how crazy that must have been for you to see! Haha. The internet makes the world so much smaller!

  15. Funny - I was searching for a "3 little birds" tattoo idea and found your site. My daughter's name is Marley, and my husband and I want to each get a 3 birds tattoo (obviously not the same one - my choices are a little too cute for him!) I really like the red one (a stationary company?) you have here.

  16. I, too, like the idea of 3 little birds because I have three kids. I have many surgical scars on my leg from 9 surgeries when I was in a terrible car accident when I was pregnant with my middle child. I get so many questions anyway, about what happened, so I just want something pretty on my leg. Strangely enough I want to include a 4th bird (smaller than the others) to represent the drunk driver who ran into me and killed herself. I also want to encorporate some colorful flowers....looking for flowers I like that also have meaning. Any ideas would be great.
